As of January 3, 2025, South Africa and Pakistan are engaged in the second Test of their series in Cape Town. South Africa, having won the toss and elected to bat, reached 72 for 3 at lunch, with opener Ryan Rickelton scoring an unbeaten 50. Despite Rickelton's efforts, South Africa lost key wickets late in the session. Aiden Markram and Rickelton's first-wicket partnership added 61 runs before Markram was dismissed for 17. Wiaan Mulder, promoted to number three, scored only five before being caught by Mohammad Rizwan off Mohammad Abbas. Rizwan also took the wicket of Tristan Stubbs just before lunch.

In the first Test at Centurion, South Africa secured a thrilling two-wicket victory, successfully chasing a target of 148 runs. The team was in a precarious position at 99 for 8, but a crucial unbeaten 51-run partnership between Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen led them to victory. Rabada's aggressive batting, scoring 31 not out, was instrumental in clinching the win, which also secured South Africa's place in the World Test Championship final.

Pakistan's captain, Shan Masood, emphasized the need for his team to adopt a more ruthless approach in Test cricket following the narrow loss in the first Test. He highlighted the importance of minimizing mistakes and finishing strong to convert opportunities into victories.

The second Test in Cape Town is crucial for Pakistan as they aim to level the series, while South Africa seeks a clean sweep ahead of the World Test Championship final.
